RetroArch Overlay Borders

RetroArch has long had support for fun borders/backgrounds that can fill the unused black space on HDTVs using a specially crafted shader combined with an image, as described in a previous post. However, this system can be finicky and it isn't very forgiving of different screen sizes and aspect ratios. There is another way to achieve a similar outcome, though, using RetroArch's built-in overlay system.

This system was designed to provide onscreen touch controls for the Android and iOS ports of RetroArch, but we can use the same hooks on PC to display our borders. All you have to do is add this to the bottom of your retroarch.cfg:

input_overlay = "/path/to/overlay.cfg"

You can also load overlays directly from the in-game RGUI menu under Settings > Overlay Options.

The overlay.cfg file is extremely simple, containing only 4 short lines (you can either copy these into a blank text file yourself or use the one I include in the download at the bottom of the post):

overlays = 1
overlay0_overlay = border.png
overlay0_descs = 0
overlay0_fullscreen = true 

This file tells RetroArch that there will only be 1 overlay, which image to load as the border (in this case, border.png, located in the same directory as the overlay.cfg), that there will be no buttons attached to the overlay (that is, for touchscreen controls) and that it will take up the full screen, including any black space.

In addition to these border effects, you can also use this system to apply semi-transparent overlay effects, such as scanlines, which can be useful in very low-power settings, such as on Raspberry Pis, homebrew-capable Nintendo Wiis or older cell phones that can't handle even lightweight scanline shaders. Even some MAME "rgb" effects can be used with this system with minor modification.

This system will work fine with the borders from my previous post, and here's a bunch more (formatted for 1920x1200 displays) from NeoGaf user richisawesome.

Levantine Ouzie Bundles صرر الأوزي الشامي

صرر الأوزي هي وصفة شامية شهيرة عبارة عن كرات من العجين متوسطة الحجم  محشية بالأرز واللحم والخضروات والمكسرات (القلوبات)، وأحياناً يتم عمل العجين في المنزل أو استخدام العجينة الجاهزة الخاصة بالجلاش أو عجينة رقائق السبرينج رول، استخدمت عجينة المنزل ويمكنكم اختيار العجين المفضل لكم.
نصيحة الوصفة:
1- يجب الانتباه لمقدار الملح المضاف للحم وعدم إضافة ملح إلى الأرز في حالة كان كافي.
2- لا ترققوا العجين بشكل زائد ولا سميك جداً، فقط سُمك 2 مم.
3- لا يفضل إضافة ماء بارد للحم حتى لا يصبح قاسي وصعب النضج.

الوصفة تكفــي: 5 صرر أوزي 

وقت التحضير: 30 دقيقة

وقت الطهــــي: 60 دقيقة تقريباً

وقت الخبـــــز: 15 دقيقة

"Ouzie" is a popular Levantine recipe, it's dough bundles stuffed with meat pilaf > a mix of rice, meat, vegetables, and nuts, sometimes homemade dough is used or you can use spring roll dough or phyllo pastry; I used here homemade dough.

Recipe tips:
1- The rice is cooked in the meat broth so be careful with the salt you add to the meat and don't add more to the rice in case it's good.

2- Don't roll the dough too thin nor too thick, about 2 mm thick.
3- When cooking meat don't use cold water, or it would be tough.

Fattoush with Pomegranate Molasses فتوش بدبس الرمان

الفتوش عبارة عن سلطة خبز لبنانية أو شامية شهيرة في بلاد الشام خاصة وفي العالم العربي عموماً، يتم عملها بطرق عدة ولكن لها طابعها الخاص في النهاية، دبس الرمان يعزز من طعمها اللذيذ لذا جربوا هذه الوصفة ولن تندموا :)

نصائح الوصفة:

1- طعم الفجل الأحمر وحده ربما يكون غير مقبول للبعض وأنا منهم ولكن بعد تقطيعه لشرائح رفيعة وتقليبه في هذه السلطة يعطيها طعم مميز ولذيذ جداً.

2- يمكن تحميص الخبز في الفرن إذا أردتم ألا تستخدموا أي دهون.
الوصفة تكفــي: 4 أشخاص تقريباً

وقت التحضير: 15 دقيقة

Fattoush is a delicious Lebanese or Levantine bread salad, it's very popular especially in the Levant and generally in the Arab world; it has many variations yet unique in flavor. Pomegranate molasses boosts Fatoush taste to make it the perfect salad on your dinner table so you won't regret making it :)

Recipe tip

1- Some people (including me) find the red radish too sharp, but when sliced thinly and added to this salad the flavors mix in a perfect way that you would really love to have it.

2- For lower fat version you may toast the bread in the oven and don't use butter.

Serves: 4 people approx.

Honey Oatmeal Porridge عصيدة الشوفان بالعسل

عصيدة الشوفان هي إحدى وجبات الإفطار المغذية سواء للكبار أو الصغار من عمر سنة، ومع مرور الوقت يمكن تقديمها للطفل بإضافة الفواكه أو التمر أو الفواكه المجففة حسب السن المناسب، ربما لمن لا يعرف هذا الطبق قد يبدوا غير مشجع على الأكل ولكن صدقوني هو لذيذ ومفيد جداً.

نصيحة الوصفة:

1- هذا المقدار لقوام معتدل يمكنكم إضافة القليل من الحليب لتخفيفه إذا أحببتم ولكن لا تخففوه تماماً فيجب أن يكون قوامه ثقيل نوعاً ما وليس كقوام الحساء مثلاً.

2- يفضل استخدام الشوفان كامل الحبة (مكتوب بالمكونات whole grain) فهو أكثر إفادة من الشوفان العادي إن كان متاح.

3- تصلح هذه الوجبة فقط للأطفال بعد أن يتموا العام من العمر وليس قبل ذلك، ويمكن تقديم الفاكهة المناسبة لطفلك حسب عمره مع هذه العصيدة.

الوصفة تكفي: وجبة أو وجبتين حسب شهية طفلك
